In New Jersey there are three primary reasons that your driver's license can be suspended.  The first is if you have too many points on your license. Points are assessed for all types of moving violations, though the most common is speeding. In New Jersey, if you have 12 points on your license, this results in an automatic suspension of your license and an notice of suspension will be sent to your last known address by the Division of Motor Vehicles.  Failure to notify Motor Vehicles of a change of address is not a valid excuse for not knowing that your license has been suspended. The second reason for a suspension is failure to respond to a ticket.  No matter how insignificant the ticket, you must follow the instructions on the back of the ticket and contact the court.  Failure to do so will result in a judge issuing a warrant for your arrest and suspending your license.  Finally, some of the more serious traffic offenses result in an automatic suspension of your license.  These include driving while intoxicated and driving without insurance.  Furthermore, a suspension is often sought if you are involved in a fatal car accident.
